The Red Baron-Manfred von Richthofen 1892-1918 was a legendary German fighter pilot. He was an air squadron leader, flying ace and the most successful fighter pilot of World War 1. To become an air ace, a fighter pilot had to have a total of five confirmed kills. The top British ace was Major James McCudden with 57 kills. The top Scottish fighter ace with 39 kills was Major John Gilmour. The Red Baron with 80 confirmed air combat victories was known as the ‘ace of aces’.

Shown above is the Red Baron next to his famous Red Fokker Driedecker plane.  Also in the picture is the Flying Circus.   The Red Baron’s flying group became known as the Richtofen Flying Circus because all the planes were painted bright colours for easy identification. And like a circus, they travelled by train to wherever they were needed.  They also housed themselves and their planes in large circus type tents.

The graphic to the right shows the price of a model with the very same dimensions as the pupils plane.

If you select the graphic to the right you will see S2 pupils and their scratch built tri plane model constructions.

After they made the individual parts the pupils painted them with individual markings.  The tri planes were then assembled.

They were then ready to fly with the Red Baron’s Flying Circus.
