More than any other type of war vessel, battleships constituted a potent symbol of national might and naval domination. For decades, the numbers and abilities of battleships were a major factor in diplomacy and military strategy. They were the highest form of technology a country could produce.
National resources were poured into the making of these steel monsters. Without battleships a country could never hope to be a world power. Only Great Britain, Germany, Japan, the United States of America, France and Russia could afford these great ships of war.
These were famous ships. Most British schoolboys could identify each individual battleship by its outline or profile.
