A sand casting is a cast part produced by forming a [mould - pattern -form] from a sand mixture and pouring molten liquid [wood-plastic-metal] into the cavity in the mould. The mould is then [heated-washed-cooled] until the metal has solidified.

A riser or feeder is a [reservoir-dam-wall] built into a metal-casting mould to prevent cavities due to shrinkage. Because metals are less dense as liquids than as solids, castings [shrink-expand-bend] as they cool. This can leave a void, generally at the last point to solidify. Risers [cause-prevent-enjoy] this by providing [frozen-molten-solid] metal , so that the cavity forms in the riser, not the casting

In casting, a runner is the passage through which a molten metal is [poured-thrown-mixed] into the mold. The runner is formed by a [bolt-dowel-brush] which is removed from the [sand-packaging-water] to make the hole into which the metal is poured. It can also serve as a feeder.

The sand can then be broken away and the casting [varnished-polished-removed]

Taps and dies are [cutting-planing-filing] tools used to create [finishes-roughness-screw threads] in solid substances including, metal, wood, and plastic.

A thermoplastic is a [wood-metal-plastic] that turns soft when [cooled-heated] and [cools-heats] to a very glassy state when [hammered-filed-cooled]. Thermoplastics [can-cannot] be [hammered-filed- reheated] and reshaped many times. Examples of thermoplastics are acrylic, nylon, PVC and many more. Uses are plates, tubes, bottles, boxes, car parts and many more.

Thermosetting plastics (thermosets) are [plastic-ceramic-stone] materials that [dry-break-set] . They [cannot-can] be reheated and reformed. Used for electrical components, adhesives and many more. The cure may be done through [cooling-heat], or through a chemical reaction.

To [mark out-clean-paint] a mortise joint a special gauge is required called a mortise gauge. It is different from a marking gauge in that it has two [saddle-stirrup-spur] points instead of one.

The mortise gauge is a special type of marking gauge and it is used to mark the [stone-plastic-wood] so that a mortise can be [painted-cut-polished] into it.  A mortise [file-brush-chisel] is then used to remove the waste wood.
